What to Wear & How To Pack | 11 days in Scotland | Carry-on Only

Minimalistic approach to travel can be as easy as 1,2,3.    Read how...

Hey everyone, it's Hazel Dodson here from Travel on Trips! I'm back with another exciting travel blog, and this time, I'm going to share my packing tips for an incredible 11-day trip to Scotland, all with just one carry-on bag. Let's get packing!

I'll share with you my new luggage system by MONOS!  I purchased their carry-on suitcase, backpack personal item and their packing cubes to see if I could travel without a checked bag.  I have never traveled for a week's vacation like this before and was a little nervous about downsizing.  But I soon realized that there was nothing to be afraid of.  If I can do it, so can you!

The Monos Carry-On Pro Plus
  • Let me introduce you to my travel buddy for this trip - the Monos Carry-On Pro Plus in a stunning Ocean Blue color. This thing is pure perfection and the reason we can travel with just a carry-on only! The "Pro" in its name is well-earned, thanks to the front zipper compartment that gives me quick access to my laptop during security checks.  However, I decided not to use it and  left my laptop at home, giving me extra room inside to pack more clothes - bonus.
  • The wheels are so smooth that even with my carry-on fully packed, I can effortlessly glide it with just one hand.
  • The locking mechanism on the side is a cool bonus, and I'm impressed with the sturdy telescoping handle with the button to extend it hidden underneath.
  • I appreciate the design and functionality of this carry-on. It's sleek, spacious, and it looks like a million bucks!
The Metro Backpack
  • I must admit, I'm absolutely in love with my new Metro backpack in Mahogany color. Although it's a bit heavier than my usual lightweight nylon bags, the sturdiness and sleek faux leather design make it worth it. The lay flat-opening feature is a game-changer for getting through security.
  • A small exterior bag, attached with magnetic buttons, keeps my electronics, sleep mask, earbuds, and other in-flight necessities right by my side. No more digging through the overhead compartment or struggling under the seat to get something out of my personal item bag.  I simply pull on the toggle to release the magnetic buttons and keep this handy little bag in the seat back pocket.
  • The backpack also comes with a strap allowing my carry-on's handle to slide inside, making it super convenient during airport navigation. Plus, it has a compartment at the back to safely stow my full-size laptop (which I didn't bring as mentioned above). Talk about a well-thought-out backpack!

Monos Compressible Packing Cubes
  • I've always used packing cubes to keep my clothes organized while traveling but my thinking changed when I had to think about saving as much space as possible
  • I purchased the compressible cubes from Monos for just that
  • If you pack them to approximately 75% , once zipped, there is an additional zipper that compresses the bag closed another 50% - game changer!
  • These cubes are heavier than most, so if you do not have weight restrictions I recommend them because they feel really strong and durable. This comes in handy when compressing them.
  • Using compression cubes saves so much space in my carry-on bag.  I only wish I knew this existed sooner!

Packing Strategy and Items
  • Alright, now let's dive into the nitty-gritty of packing. I believe in the power of packing cubes, and the Monos packing cubes are absolute gems! Packing at 75% capacity and then compressing with the zipper system allowed me to pack more clothes, but... I also saved a bit of room for  for shopping!
  • First up, in the first packing cube, I packed all the essentials. 8 pairs of underpants, 2 sets of pajamas, 2 bras, 1 sports bra, 6 pairs of socks, 1 nightgown, and 1 bikini (thinking positive for good beach weather)
  • Second cube, I carefully organized my tops. With a casual three-quarter sleeve top, a black tank top, a blouse, a casual tee, a warm thermal long sleeve, a denim top, a denim long sleeve, a grey tank top, an ivory tank top, a cute little dress for dinners and a cozy faux suede cardigan for those chilly Scottish days.
  • My third packing cube is all about pants. Black capris, denim stretch jeans, black leggings and a pair of shorts - you name it, I've packed it!
  • Items not in a packing cubes but include in the carry-on bag is a raincoat, a casual jacket, a pair of casual pants, a vest, and a neck gaiter.  Oh, and my trusty rain paints, perfect for unpredictable Scottish weather.
  • I also brought along 3 nylon reusable totes for shopping (they charge a fee for plastic shopping bags in the UK).
  • Other items packed; curling iron, toiletry bag, packable backpack (for day trips to the beach), sandals, and a hair brush.

Shoes and Accessories
  • Scotland, here I come, prepared with some fantastic shoe choices! I've got casual flats, and cute casual boots that are oh-so-comfortable for exploring charming Scottish villages.
  • To save space in my carry-on, I'm wearing my waterproof hiking shoes on the plane. They're practical and perfect for any adventure that comes my way.
  • Of course, I've packed sandals for those sunny days with stunning views and walks along the pristine costal beaches.
  • Oh, and I can't forget my fabulous neck pillow. I've yet to find the ultimate neck pillow, but this one looks promising!
  • I have short legs so on the plan I always bring a foot hammock for longer or red-eye flights.  Trust me, it saves my knees from dangling and aching.
Conclusion
  • Traveling without a checked bag can seem intimidating but honestly, with all the stories about flight delays, lost luggage, and damaged bags, it's worth trying this minimalistic approach to travel.
  • And there you have it, my ultimate packing guide for an 11-day trip to Scotland with just one carry-on bag. It may seem like a challenge, but trust me, it's entirely doable!
  • The Monos Carry-On Pro Plus, Metro backpack and compressible cubes have been game-changers in making my travels more organized and stress-free.
  • I can't wait to embark on this and more adventures
