The Alchemy of Passion, Purpose, and Magic in Life
Life's journey is a profound adventure, filled with twists and turns, challenges, and moments of sheer joy. Amidst this beautiful chaos, the quote, "Passion is the fuel, purpose is the compass, and magic is the art of turning adversity into adventure," stands as a beacon of wisdom, offering guidance for those seeking a more meaningful and exciting path.
1. Passion as the Fuel:
Passion is the force that propels us forward. It's that burning desire within us for something that makes our hearts happy. Whether it's a hobby, a career, a cause, or a relationship, our passions are what gets us through life. Without them, we can still live a successful life, but let's be honest, it won't be as fulfilling. Our passions provide the just the right amount of energy and motivation we need to keep moving, even when faced with challenges. If you are enthusiastic about something, you may just have a spark of passion about it also.
For me, Skating has always been my passion. I realized this at a very young age. I lived to skate! At age nine I asked my parents to allow my coach to adopt me so that I could quit school and move to train for the Olympics full time. I was denied and never fulfilled my dream but it's amazing to me how a child can dream so big! As we get older our dreams and desires become smaller and smaller until sometimes they completely disappear. This happened to me too.
Then, in my twenties, I drove 2,370 miles (4 days) across the country to pursue my passion to skate again. I eventually got that wish I begged for in my younger years, it just happened in a different way and on a much later timeline. If you are truly passionate about something, you can make it happen. Let the fuel of your passions lead you to your destiny.
2. Purpose as the Compass:
But passion alone can be like a ship without a rudder, lost at sea. This is where purpose comes into play. Purpose acts as our guiding compass, helping us navigate life's often turbulent waters. It answers the fundamental question of "Why?" Why are we here, and what are we striving to achieve? When we align our passions with a greater purpose, our actions become more intentional and focused, making the journey more fulfilling.
So why did I drive 4 days across the country to British Columbia to figure skate? If I couldn't be a competitive figure skater, maybe I could help others realize their dreams, so I decided to become a coach. I was too old and had no money to pursue competitive figure skating for myself but I knew I wanted skating in my life, so I was willing to take it in any form I could get. If that meant coaching, then so be it. I'll be the best damn coach I possibly can. I would offer what little knowledge and experience I had from my past and the newly rediscovered skills I learned in recent months, combined with my overabundance of enthusiasm, to help kids become the greatest they could be. My willingness to help outweighed my shortcomings and I was ready to change the fate of those willing to give me a chance.
3. Magic as the Art of Transformation:
The magic in life lies in our ability to transform adversity into adventure. Life is not without its trials and tribulations, but it's in those very moments of challenge that we have the opportunity to discover our own resilience and creativity. When we face adversity with an open heart and an adventurous spirit, we can find unexpected solutions, learn valuable lessons, and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.
When I arrived in British Columbia, I had nowhere to live. I didn't know how to run a skating club. I only knew how to teach the basics in skating. I didn't have any experience in lesson planning, ice show production, skater evaluations, board meetings, fundraising, or equipment recommendations. I faced each challenge with an open mind and heart, and I was willing to learn. I never gave up. I Kept a positive attitude and gave my very best efforts at all times. I became resilient and leaned on my creativity to help me navigate the unknown. I learned so much. Not only did I teach twenty five hours on ice per week, I was fully submerged in the administrative side of running a club and gained years of invaluable work experience.
Along with my coaching duties, I trained every opportunity I could so that I could take skating tests to advance my skills to teach higher levels. I passed seventeen skating tests in just an eight month period. This is unheard of!! But I did it! I'm proof that against all odds, anything is possible!
You can achieve greatness. All you have to do is let your passion fuel you. Let your purpose guide you. And turn the adversities you face into Adventures! That's how you find true magic along your life's journey!
You can turn adversity into Magic!
